Reading

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
Dr. Seuss
‘Books were my path to personal freedom, I learned to read age 3 and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.’
Oprah Winfrey

Our Reading Approach

The evidence is clear, pupils who engage with reading early, start to like reading. At Ireby, reading is central to all we do from day one of a child's time with us. Reading stories together, having fun with characters and plots - re-reading old favourites in a cosy classroom and role-playing our favourite scenes - all powerful motivators as children learn about the world. Roald Dahl said it best whilst describing his character Matilda: ""The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.”

Reading is fundamental to all we do and is vital to our children's future success. Pupil's who read proficiently are likely to be able to access and enjoy the whole curriculum - helping them to know more and understand the world around them.

Our aim is therefore simple - to ensure every child leaves Ireby a fluent reader, able to comprehend age-appropriate texts and access their full curriculum. This we believe will give them the confidence to go forward and builds a secure platform for future success.
